COOL DOWN (2016)
At the end of summer Rooftoptiger presented an ice-cold installation at the Sporen 2016 art exhibition in Ypres. Cool Down commemorated melted ice sheets. In the course of one week 1300 litres of water from the moat surrounding the ramparts of Ypres were turned into a 3,5-metres tall frozen obelisk. The obelisks of ancient Egypt were monolithic pillars said to symbolize petrified rays of sunlight. Rooftoptiger’s short-lived monument in the ice cellar of the ramparts of Ypres consisted of 1200 blocks of ice, frozen at the local people’s houses using empty drink cartons as moulds.
